Hi everyone,

We wanted to give you a heads up on some breaking news.

As you may have heard, there has been an ongoing discussion about if/when Greta Thunberg and the youth climate strikers will call for the rest of society to join them. Our 350.org global colleagues and Bill McKibben have been working to figure this out, but given the challenges of coordinating with an amorphous global youth movement, it has taken a while. Now after many delays plans are falling into place. It looks like this Friday’s (5/24) global youth climate strike actions will be when they call for all of society to join them in a global week of action Friday, September 20 to Friday, September 27, 2019.

350.org in the U.S. is still figuring out exactly how we’ll be plugging into this global mobilization. This is what we can share now:

On Friday, as nearly 1350 school strikes take place in 111 countries, 350’s global team will be doing live coverage and then amplifying the youth call to action for a Global Climate Strike (formerly known as walkouts) and international week of action starting on September 20. There will be an op-ed from youth organizers on Friday, and 350.org will blast it out along with a response from Bill McKibben and other ‘grown-ups’ committing to organize in response to the call. Here’s the draft site going live on Friday in several languages where folks all around the world can sign up and access some basic organizing materials.

Since we are are doing our best to follow the youth lead we’re not sure exactly how all this will land but we assume as with past mobilizations we will eventually have a global map where you’ll be able to register an action. As a local 350 affiliate you will have a chance to register your local action on the map before it goes public.

So please talk with your group and start deciding if you want to organize a local climate strike in September!

In the meantime, after Friday if you know you are interested in organizing around this you can sign up on the website above. We’ll be in touch with more updates as soon as we have them.

Thank you,
